A Little Learning

Evelyn Waugh’s autobiography offers a captivating journey through his life, beginning with his literary ancestry and a vibrant childhood. He recounts his varied school experiences, from the serene days at Hampstead to the tumultuous times at Lancing, and vividly captures his Oxford years, famously depicted in “Brideshead Revisited.” Waugh’s narrative is a tapestry of friendships and the hedonistic spirit of his generation, featuring notable figures like Harold Acton and Cyril Connolly. The book concludes with his time as a schoolmaster in North Wales, which inspired “Decline and Fall.”
