A Short Residence in Sweden, Norway and Denmark

This book combines a travel narrative and a biography, capturing the profound connection between two innovative thinkers of the late eighteenth century. “A Short Residence in Sweden” documents Mary Wollstonecraft’s final journey through Scandinavia’s remote landscapes, driven by a quest for happiness, a lost treasure ship, and the echoes of the French Revolution. Richard Holmes regards this vivid account as a hidden gem of early English Romanticism. “Memoirs,” written by William Godwin shortly after Wollstonecraft’s untimely death, offers an intimate and candid portrayal of his wife, defying literary norms and challenging societal expectations. Initially met with scandal and suppression, it is now celebrated as a pivotal work in modern biography.
