Born a Muslim

Winner of Tata Literature Live! Book of the Year Award - Non-fiction 2021 and Atta Galatta- Bangalore Literature Festival – Book of the Year 2021 (Non-fiction), “Born a Muslim: Some Truths about Islam in India” explores the complex identity of Indian Muslims. The book delves into whether they are a monolithic community or a diverse group deeply rooted in India’s cultural ethos. It questions the existence of an “Indian Islam” that has evolved from its Arabian origins, influenced by local traditions. The author examines the decline of Islam’s power over centuries, attributing it to a shift from the religion’s spirit to dogma. Through a comprehensive analysis, the book addresses the socio-economic and intellectual stagnation of Indian Muslims, highlighting both internal and external factors. It offers empathetic insights into the Muslim experience in India and proposes ways to improve their situation. By combining memoir, history, reportage, scholarship, and interviews, the author sheds light on the challenges faced by Muslims due to government apathy and societal prejudice.
