Hindu Kingship, Ethnic Revival, and the Maoist Rebellion in Nepal

This volume delves into the intricate issues of tribal identity and the Maoist rebellion within the framework of Hindu kingship and caste organization. Set against the backdrop of Nepal in the 1990s, it examines the rise of two transformative movements—ethnic revivalism and the Maoist rebellion. Drawing from the author's immersive fieldwork in central Nepal, the book provides a vivid portrayal of a multi-caste, multi-ethnic village where interactions between Hindus and tribal populations have shaped social dynamics since the fifteenth century. Special attention is given to the Magars, the largest indigenous group, and their historical ties with Hindu rulers.
