How to Save the Internet

The global, open internet is fragmenting. As democracies attempt to control the influence of Big Tech, Silicon Valley shifts towards an America-first agenda, and authoritarian regimes like China and Russia isolate their populations from the global web, the internet—once the ultimate tool for global unity—faces the threat of disintegration. Nick Clegg, Meta’s former President, Global Affairs, provides an insider’s view of Meta and his discussions with world leaders, highlighting the missteps of Big Tech, the insularity of Silicon Valley, and the urgent need for radical reforms to ensure the long-term viability of global platforms. He argues that many accusations against these companies, such as their algorithms causing polarization and harm, are exaggerated or false. While new regulations are crucial, imposing national boundaries on the internet is not the solution, as it would severely limit its potential for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, education, trade, and scientific research, ultimately hindering the progress and empowerment of billions.
