Journeys End

Journey’s End by R.C. Sherriff is a powerful and unflinching portrayal of life in the trenches during the final days of the First World War. Praised by George Bernard Shaw as a corrective to the romanticized view of war, this Penguin Classics edition captures the raw emotions and harsh realities faced by British officers on the front line. The story unfolds in a dugout in France, where young officer Raleigh joins his friend Stanhope, only to find him transformed by the war. The play, which premiered in 1928 with Laurence Olivier in the lead role, quickly became a stage success and remains a poignant anti-war classic. Sherriff, who served as a captain in the East Surrey regiment during the war, drew from his experiences to craft this compelling narrative.
