Modi's India

Christophe Jaffrelot's 'Modi's India' offers a critical examination of how India, under Narendra Modi's leadership, has transformed from a vibrant democracy towards authoritarianism and intolerance, propelled by Hindu nationalism and a potent form of national populism.
Drawing on extensive research and interviews, Jaffrelot details how Modi's highly personalized political style combines promises of development with ethno-religious polarization. The book reveals how this approach has fostered an 'ethnic democracy,' where the majoritarian community is equated with the nation, marginalizing Muslims and Christians as second-class citizens, often targeted by vigilante groups. Jaffrelot further explains how this muscular Hindu nationalism undermines secularists, intellectuals, universities, and NGOs, while the government centralizes power, eroding federalism and weakening democratic checks and balances.
