My Garden (Book)

Jamaica Kincaid’s
My Garden (Book)
is an intimate exploration of her first garden in Vermont, a modest plot nestled in the middle of her front lawn. Defying conventional gardening wisdom, she planted only the seeds of flowers she cherished most. In this captivating work, Kincaid gathers her profound love for gardening and plants, sharing insights with passion, sharp wit, and an unmistakable personal flair. Her writing reveals both deep affections and strong aversions—she revels in spring and summer while shunning winter for concealing the beauty of gardens. She admires the rhododendron ‘Jane Grant’ and simple ‘Blue Lake’ string beans but holds a strong dislike for the Asiatic lily. Drawing inspiration from seed catalogues, the legendary gardener Gertrude Jekyll, and iconic gardens like Monet’s at Giverny, she also reflects on her formative experiences with gardens in her native Antigua.
