Nagarjuna in Context

Nagarjuna in Context
delves deeply into the life, philosophy, and influence of the Indian philosopher Nagarjuna, one of the most prominent figures in Mahayana Buddhism. Joseph Walser’s work situates Nagarjuna’s teachings within the broader context of early Indian culture, philosophy, and the development of Buddhist thought. Nagarjuna is best known for his doctrine of
śūnyatā
(emptiness), which challenges the notions of inherent existence and offers a radical reinterpretation of reality. The book explores Nagarjuna's texts and examines how his ideas were not only a response to earlier Buddhist traditions but also to the broader intellectual currents of ancient India.
Walser's work takes a multi-disciplinary approach, drawing from historical, philosophical, and cultural perspectives. It sheds light on the complex relationship between Nagarjuna's thought and its historical context, focusing on his influence within the Mahayana tradition and its interplay with early Indian philosophies such as Vedanta, Jainism, and the Samkhya school.
