New Science

Giambattista Vico’s “New Science” is a groundbreaking exploration of ancient history, mythology, and laws, challenging the Renaissance view of classical antiquity as a model for modernity. Vico argues that understanding the past requires recognizing the distinct customs and emotions of ancient civilizations like the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Jews, and Babylonians. His work spans diverse topics, including physics, poetics, economics, mythology, family structures, and biblical events, marking a pivotal shift in humanist thought. Since the rise of Romanticism, “New Science” has profoundly influenced thinkers such as Karl Marx and inspired the structure of James Joyce’s “Finnegan’s Wake.”
