On a Chinese Screen

On a Chinese Screen
is a collection of vivid vignettes by W. Somerset Maugham, first published in 1922. Based on his early 20th-century travels through China, the book offers a series of snapshots of the country’s landscapes, customs, and people. It portrays a diverse range of characters, from Chinese citizens to foreign expatriates, set against the backdrop of bustling cities and serene rural villages.
More than a traditional travelogue, this work forms an evocative tapestry of Maugham's observations, anecdotes, and reflections. It delves into cultural contrasts and the lives of individuals navigating a world shaped by colonialism, tradition, and modernity.
