On Painting

Leon Battista Alberti’s “On Painting” (1435) is a seminal work that transformed art history with its innovative theories of perspective. Drawing inspiration from nature’s order and beauty, Alberti outlines the principles of distance, dimension, and proportion, guiding painters on composition, representation, light, and color. He also emphasizes the moral and artistic qualities essential for a successful painter. This influential text profoundly impacted Italian Renaissance artists like Ghiberti, Fra Angelico, and Veneziano, as well as later figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, and continues to be a vital theory in art.
