Selected Poems and Fragments

Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843) is celebrated as one of Europe’s greatest poets. His poetic journey began with epigrams and odes inspired by his love for a banker’s wife, leading him to create a remarkable series of hymns that delve into cosmology and history, spanning from mythological times to the discovery of America and his own era. In contrast, the ‘Canticles of Night’ feature mysterious fragments in a groundbreaking style that foreshadows the Symbolists and Surrealists. This collection highlights Hölderlin’s mastery of Classical and Christian imagery as he seeks meaning in a world filled with uncertainty.
