The Atom Station

Halldór Laxness's 'The Atom Station' masterfully portrays the cultural and political upheaval in post-World War II Iceland. When an American offer to build a NATO airbase ignites nationwide protest, a young woman from the rural north finds herself immersed in the sophisticated, yet often superficial, society of the capital. Her observations from her position as a maid in a Member of Parliament's home expose the stark contrast between traditional Icelandic values and the modernizing forces at play.
