The Battle of Belonging

Shashi Tharoor's "The Battle of Belonging" rigorously examines the fundamental questions of nationalism, patriotism, citizenship, and identity within modern India. It delves into the contrasting visions of India's nationhood, exploring how historical ideals enshrined in its Constitution clash with contemporary ethno-religious interpretations.
The book opens by tracing the evolution of nationalism, liberalism, and democracy, many of which influenced India's founding principles. Tharoor then analyzes India's constitutional liberal tradition, highlighting the inclusive values championed by figures like Gandhi, Nehru, and Ambedkar. He starkly contrasts these with the divisive "us vs. them" narratives propagated by Hindutva ideologues. "The Battle of Belonging" frames the current struggle as one between civic nationalism and ethno-religious nationalism, asserting that India's core values of pluralism and secularism are under threat. Tharoor argues that institutions are being undermined, minorities demonized, and that an authoritative illiberalism challenges the very "idea of India" (a phrase coined by Rabindranath Tagore). Drawing on deep scholarship, this work passionately advocates for strengthening India's unique identity against these forces.
