The Beggar's Opera

In “The Beggar’s Opera,” John Gay revolutionizes the theatrical world by subverting Italian opera norms with traditional ballads and street tunes, while satirizing Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole. The story follows Peachum, a thief-taker, as he plots to execute the charming highwayman Macheath, offering a vivid portrayal of London’s corrupt underworld filled with thieves, informers, prostitutes, and highwaymen. This edition, introduced by Bryan Loughrey and T. O.
