Detective Renée Ballard is relegated to the night shift in Hollywood, a punishment after she filed a sexual harassment complaint. Her job involves initiating investigations only to hand them over to day-shift detectives at dawn, preventing her from seeing any case through to completion. However, two particularly disturbing cases emerge during one shift: the severe beating of a prostitute and the fatal shooting of a young woman in a nightclub. Against department protocol and her partner's advice, Ballard decides she cannot relinquish these investigations.
