The Mercies

In 1617, a fierce storm devastates Vardø, a remote Norwegian island, leaving all its men lost at sea. The surviving women are left to build a new society independently. Eighteen months later, this hard-won autonomy is threatened by the arrival of Absalom Cornet, a commissioner dispatched to impose order and root out perceived moral decay. With him is his young wife, Ursa, who finds herself drawn to the resilient island women, particularly Maren, while Absalom sees only a dangerous challenge to his authority.
