The Orders Were To Rape You

In 2009, the brutal genocidal war led by the Sri Lankan state against the Tamil population came to an end. By 2012, Meena Kandasamy, who grew up surrounded by images of Tamil Tigers and Tigresses, embarked on a mission to create a documentary highlighting the violence endured by female fighters of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the war's aftermath. Through her journey, she meets resilient women who survived the horrific Sri Lankan camps, where violence and trauma were rampant. Although her documentary remains unfinished, Kandasamy delves into old hard drives, reconstructing the fragmented stories of these survivors. Alongside, she translates the evocative poetry of three Tamil women combatants—poetry that stands as resistance, a powerful call to arms, and a testament to enduring spirit.
