The Oxford Handbook of Tantric Studies

The Oxford Handbook of Tantric Studies
is a comprehensive academic resource that delves into the multifaceted traditions of Tantra across various cultures and historical periods.
Spanning over 1,200 pages and comprising more than 40 chapters by an international roster of scholars, this volume addresses the complexities and nuances of Tantric practices and philosophies
The handbook is structured thematically, beginning with the concept of "action," a central element in Tantric traditions encompassing rituals, meditation, chanting, pilgrimage, and the reenactment of sacred narratives.
Subsequent sections explore themes such as transformation, gender and embodiment, extraordinary beings (like deities and saints), artistic and visual expressions, language and literature, social organizations, and the historiography of Tantra.
By integrating perspectives from Hindu and Buddhist contexts and incorporating contemporary approaches like gender studies, ethnography, and cognitive science, this work aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and provide a nuanced understanding of Tantra beyond its often misunderstood representations.
