The Saga of the Volsungs

The Saga of the Volsungs is a captivating tale of jealousy, unrequited love, greed, and vengeance, rooted in Viking Age poems and written in thirteenth-century Iceland. It chronicles the heroic exploits of Sigurd the dragon slayer, who gains runic wisdom from one of Odin’s Valkyries. Set against a backdrop of historical events from the fourth and fifth centuries, the saga intertwines mythology and legend with human drama, featuring figures like Attila the Hun. Jesse L. Byock’s insightful introduction connects these historical elements to the saga’s extraordinary narrative, which includes the cursed Rhinegold, a reforged sword, and a magical ring of power. This epic has inspired fantasy writers like J. R. R. Tolkien and Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle.
