The Secret History

Procopius, the official chronicler of the Byzantine Empire, offers a startling counter-narrative to his public works in “The Secret History.” While his “History of the Wars of Justinian” lauded Emperor Justinian, this explosive account unveils a darker truth. Justinian is portrayed as a corrupt tyrant, Empress Theodora as a manipulative sorceress, and General Belisarius as a mere pawn in his wife Antonina’s schemes. Procopius’s vivid and opinionated style paints a compelling picture of Byzantium as a realm rife with murder and misrule, challenging conventional historical perspectives.
