Three Elegies for Kosovo

Kadare’s book weaves together three compelling narratives that explore the enduring impact of the Battle of the Blackbirds on European history. Set against the backdrop of 28 June 1389, where a Christian coalition faced the Ottoman forces, the book delves into the myths of betrayal and defeat that have lingered for centuries. Fast forward to 28 June 1989, and the echoes of this historic battle resonate in the brutal campaign led by Slobodan Milosevic against the Albanians in Kosovo. Through these stories, Kadare illuminates how ancient legends have shaped modern conflicts, culminating in the suffering of a small population at the century’s close.
