Travels With A Donkey In The Cvennes And The Amateur Emigrant

In 1878, Robert Louis Stevenson, grappling with poor health and unrequited love, embarked on a transformative journey through the Cevennes with a donkey named Modestine. This adventure became the basis for his classic travelogue, “Travels with a Donkey.” Seeking to reunite with Fanny Osbourne, a married American woman, Stevenson crossed the Atlantic and traversed America, documenting his experiences in “The Amateur Emigrant.” Both works not only capture the landscapes he explored but also reveal deep insights into his character.
