When The Going Was Good

Evelyn Waugh’s collection of writings captures his extensive travels between 1929 and 1935, offering a vivid account of his adventures with his signature wit and insight. The book chronicles a Mediterranean cruise, a train journey from Djibouti to Abyssinia for Emperor Haile Selassie’s 1930 coronation, and his explorations in Aden, Zanzibar, Kenya, and the Congo, where he endured sweltering heat and relentless mosquitoes. It also details his travels to Guyana and Brazil, and his return to Addis Ababa in 1935 to report on the Abyssinia-Italy war. These experiences inspired some of his classic novels, including “Scoop” and “Black Mischief.”
