जियरा [Jiyara]

'जियरा' (Jiyara) is the fourth short story collection by acclaimed Nepali author Nayan Raj Pandey, known for his masterful portrayal of Madeshi life. This powerful anthology features thirteen long stories, predominantly set against the vibrant and often challenging backdrop of Nepal's Madesh region. Pandey employs a distinctive and experimental narrative style, delving deep into the human experience. The title 'Jiyara,' a prevalent Hindi word in West Madesh signifying 'body' or 'soul,' aptly captures the essence of the collection.
The collection is notable for its strong focus on female protagonists, illuminating the severe violence and millennia-long oppression faced by women in Madesh. Through these stories, Pandey gives voice to the tragic lives of thousands of women who have endured atrocities such as being burned alive, subjected to acid attacks, or murdered over dowry disputes, bringing their poignant realities to the forefront.
