A Different Sea

Enrico, a young intellectual from the diverse city of Gorizia, embarks on a solitary journey to the Patagonian pampas, armed with Greek texts and a quest for authenticity. Guided by the teachings of his late friend Carlo, a philosopher who ended his life, Enrico seeks a life free from societal lies. However, his relentless pursuit of this ideal leads to the unraveling of any semblance of normalcy, even upon his return to isolation by the Istrian sea. Through Enrico’s story, Magris captures the tumultuous world of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, teetering on the brink of collapse amidst the chaos of the Great War and subsequent revolutions.
