A Long Petal of the Sea

Amidst the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War, a young, pregnant widow and an army doctor are forced to flee their homeland. Their lives become inextricably linked through a marriage of convenience, undertaken to secure passage on a ship bound for Chile, a vessel chartered by the poet Pablo Neruda. This journey marks the beginning of a new life in a land described as "the long petal of sea and wine and snow."
As they navigate the challenges of exile and build a new existence, their initial reluctant partnership gradually transforms into a deep and enduring love. Their story unfolds against a backdrop of sweeping historical events, witnessing both personal triumphs and the ongoing global struggle between freedom and repression.
Over the course of four generations, their lives intertwine with a rich cast of characters, experiencing love, tragedy, and the constant search for a place to call home. Their journey is a testament to resilience, the power of human connection, and the enduring hope of finding belonging even in the face of displacement.
