A Month in the Country

In “A Month in the Country,” J.L. Carr beautifully captures the healing journey of Tom Birkin, a World War I survivor, as he finds solace in the tranquil village of Oxgodby. Tasked with restoring a medieval wall-painting, Birkin immerses himself in the serene countryside and the simple rhythms of village life, experiencing a profound renewal. Reflecting on this idyllic summer of 1920, he cherishes a time of peace and hope that has sustained him through life’s challenges. Adapted into a film starring Colin Firth, Natasha Richardson, and Kenneth Branagh, this novel explores the slow restoration of life’s natural order disrupted by war.
