Annie John

Annie John
is a haunting and tragicomic tale of the end of childhood, told with Jamaica Kincaid's trademark candour and complexity.
Set on the island of Antigua, the novel follows Annie, an adored only child who has lived a peaceful and content life, inseparable from her beautiful mother.
As Annie turns twelve, her life begins to change in mysterious ways.
She starts to question the cultural assumptions of her island world, makes rebellious friends at school, and challenges authority.
Most frighteningly, her mother, seeing Annie as a 'young lady', ceases to be the source of unconditional adoration and becomes an unfamiliar adversary.
