Behind the Door

In “Behind the Door,” Giorgio Bassani captures the poignant journey of a young Jewish boy navigating the complex social dynamics of 1930s Ferrara, Italy. As he experiences the joys and sorrows of childhood friendship, he becomes acutely aware of the pervasive exclusion and prejudice that come with his identity. This fourth installment in Bassani’s Romanzo di Ferrara cycle is a beautifully rendered exploration of innocence lost amidst the backdrop of a turbulent historical era.
