Cixin Liu's the Village Teacher

In a remote mountain village, a dying teacher dedicates his final breath to imparting lessons in science and mathematics to his students, unaware that their simple classroom is about to become an unlikely crucible for Earth's fate. Fifty thousand light-years away, an ancient interstellar war concludes, and the victorious aliens prepare to purge low-intelligence lifeforms from what is now their solar system. Their method: a cosmic intelligence test, administered randomly by a computer of science and mathematics. On a small blue planet, nestled in a spiral arm of the Milky Way, the chosen subjects are a group of peasant children, still grasping their teacher's desperate, final lessons in a world shrouded by ignorance and superstition.
