Closely Watched Trains

Set in wartime Czechoslovakia,
Closely Watched Trains
follows the journey of Miloš Hrma, a young and naïve railroad apprentice grappling with personal anxieties amidst the backdrop of World War II. Miloš’s concerns revolve around his virginity, an unspoken love, and the peculiar scandals unfolding in the stationmaster’s office—all overshadowing the seemingly straightforward matter of resisting the German forces. Blending poignant reflection with subtle humour, this novella inspired the 1966 Academy Award-winning film and stands as a testament to twentieth-century Czech literary brilliance.
