Moustache

In 'Moustache,' Vavachan, a Pulayan man, takes on the role of a policeman with an imposing moustache in a local musical drama. Though his character has no dialogue and appears briefly, his powerful performance and distinctive moustache unsettle the predominantly upper-caste audience, evoking ancestral memories of Dalit strength and legendary figures. Following the play, Vavachan, whose community was historically forbidden from growing facial hair, refuses to shave his moustache. This act sparks an evolving folklore around him, transforming Vavachan into a mythical figure known simply as 'Moustache,' whose facial hair becomes a symbol of incredible, magical power, enabling his omnipresence and impossible feats.
Set against the unique watery landscape of Kuttanad, a below-sea-level farming region in Kerala, the novel intertwines Vavachan's journey with the stories of the land and its people. As they navigate their intricate environment, themes of ecology, power dynamics, and local politics naturally emerge, enriching the narrative tapestry.
