Scary Monsters

Michelle De Kretser's 'Scary Monsters' explores the complexities of migration, identity, and societal anxieties through two distinct, interconnected narratives. In one, Lyle, an Asian migrant in a near-future Australia, navigates a repressive government, xenophobia, and his family life. In the other, set in 1980s France, Lili, an Australian of Asian descent, observes the treatment of immigrants while striving for personal and intellectual independence. The novel's unique reversible format mirrors the disorientation experienced by those whose lives are upended by changing countries.
