Selected Writings: Gérard de Nerval

Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855) was a poet, visionary, short-story writer, and autobiographer who delved into the blurred lines between dream and reality, irony and madness, and autobiography and fiction. This comprehensive collection of his works features ‘Aurélia,’ his memoir of madness; ‘Sylvie,’ a haunting novella of love and memory praised by Proust as a masterpiece; ‘The Chimeras,’ a collection of enigmatic sonnets; and Nerval’s experimental fictions alongside selections from his correspondence. These pieces reveal his keen insight into how nineteenth-century psychiatry labeled his imaginative mind as mental illness, solidifying his status as a pioneering modernist and a precursor to the French Symbolists. Nerval’s work remains a crucial influence on writers like Marcel Proust, André Breton, Antonin Artaud, and Michel Leiris.
