The Lais of Marie de France

Marie de France, the earliest known French woman poet from the late twelfth century, crafted exquisite lais—verse stories inspired by Breton tales of chivalry and romance. Her works vividly depict the struggles and passions of lovers set against a backdrop of magical beings, potions, and beasts. With a nuanced perspective on courtly love, Marie de France explores themes of betrayal and sorrow, such as the tale of a knight who forsakes his fairy mistress and the story of a noblewoman who weaves her grief into a shroud for a nightingale slain by a jealous husband.
