The Manuscript Found in Saragossa

In 1739, Alphonse, a young Walloon officer, embarks on a journey to join his regiment in Madrid but is unexpectedly detained at a highway inn. There, he encounters a diverse group of individuals, including thieves, brigands, cabbalists, noblemen, coquettes, and gypsies. Over sixty-six days, he records their stories, which are later discovered in a sealed casket, revealing tales of transformation, magic, illusion, honor, cowardice, hauntings, and seductions. Jan Potocki’s novel, a rich tapestry of stories-within-stories, employs various literary styles such as gothic, picaresque, adventure, pastoral, and erotica, creating an epic narrative akin to the Decameron and Tales from the Thousand and One Nights.
