The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi

These two compelling short novels, published in the early 1930s, hold a distinguished place in Tanizaki's own literary appraisal. Although starkly contrasting in themes, both works reveal the unmistakable craftsmanship of Tanizaki, woven through their controlled complexities of tone.
The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi
delves into the dark sexual obsessions of a sixteenth-century warlord, whose youth was marked by accidental initiation into the macabre rituals of battle. Rooted in invented documents that blur the lines between fiction and historical truth, the narrative strikes a masterful balance of irony and melodrama, elegance and brutality, civilised ceremony, and vengeful savagery.
Arrowroot
similarly explores the pursuit of legend. It intertwines the journeys of two friends venturing into the mountains south of Kyoto—one tracing the echoes of a medieval myth, and the other unraveling strands of a more recent, intimate past.
