Under the Eye of the Big Bird

Under the Eye of the Big Bird
is a haunting and thought-provoking novel by Hiromi Kawakami that imagines a distant, post-human future. Structured as a series of interconnected stories, the book paints a fragmented portrait of a world where human beings are no longer born but manufactured in factories, altered with animal traits such as gills or the ability to photosynthesize. As humans become increasingly alien, they are watched over by artificial intelligences called the "Watchers" and "Mothers," designed to preserve what remains of a fading civilization.
In this quiet apocalypse, Kawakami explores existential questions: What does it mean to be human when biology is engineered? What happens to society when individuality and fertility vanish? And can meaning still be found in a world on the brink of dissolution?
